Sense of Place

SENSE OF PLACE Outside Art in Bury

This latest publication provides a snapshot of features which make Bury in Lancashire special. The book explores the townscape on the cusp of transformation and includes essays on the cultural and social context. Familiar public places of character and authenticity within the town are identified as everyday examples of local distinctiveness and originality. It documents the essence of the town from the major Victorian artifices and the palatial public houses to the quiet dignity of the weaver’s cottages and humble shop fronts. The study provides a record of the human creativity and artistic touches which make life in the town more fascinating.

Sense of Place is derived from an earlier exhibition assembled by the author Graham Cooper, with his photographer friend Doug Sargent, which contained various forms of street art and decoration as architectural embellishment. Since they began to photograph local scenes forty years ago, the townscape of Bury has altered considerably and following the extraordinary new development in The Rock, the changes seem particularly dramatic.
